In this installment of Editors’ Hot Seat, exploring the experiences of Rotaract Club leaders, we caught up with Rtr. Charith Yohan, Secretary of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT for the RI Year 2024-25. Co-Editors Rtr. Kavisha Yapa and Rtr. Tanuri Dissanayake delved into Charith’s journey to uncover the defining moments, challenges, and invaluable lessons that have shaped his Rotaract story. Here’s what he had to share:
Q. What inspired you to join Rotaract?
Back in 2021, I wasn’t involved in any clubs or extracurricular activities. My life revolved fully around academics—attending classes, heading home, and repeating the cycle. I felt like I needed to step out of my comfort zone and do something different.
I noticed a lot of activities happening around campus—events, parties, and projects organized by various clubs—and thought, “Why not give it a try?” However, I wasn’t sure where to start. So I spoke to a senior in the Biotechnology Programme who suggested I join Rotaract. Shortly after, I met Rtr. Chathushi Gunapala, the PD Director for RI Year 2022-23, who interviewed and welcomed me into the club. My first project was “Sell Me This Pen,” which was about pitching ideas, and that was the beginning of my Rotaract journey.
Q. Your most unforgettable memory in Rotaract?
There are many, but a couple memories stand out. Winning multiple awards at Excellentia this year was a huge validation of the work I’ve done both personally and as part of a team. Another memorable moment was the 34th District Assembly, where our PD projects were recognized. These achievements are not just milestones—they’re reminders of the impact we’ve made together.

Q. How has Rotaract helped you grow professionally and personally?
Rotaract has taught me so much. On the professional side, I’ve learned skills like drafting professional emails, managing email signatures, public speaking, and finding partnerships for projects. It’s also given me exposure to managing large-scale projects, which is something I’d never experienced before.
Personally, I’ve grown a lot since 2021. Back then, I was shy and reserved. Today, I’m more confident and outgoing. My roles as PD Director last year and now as Secretary have pushed me to step up and take on new challenges. I’ve also built incredible friendships along the way as well. And the person I am right now, is very different from the person that I was back in 2021 and I’m proud of how far I’ve come in my life.
Q. Someone you’ve met through Rotaract who made a significant impact on you?
For sure, the former District Rotaract Representative Rtr. PP Sathma Jayasinghe. She showed me that leadership isn’t about gender or stereotypes—it’s about strength, confidence, and the ability to guide others. Watching her lead with such grace and authority was eye-opening. Another person who’s had a big impact on me is Rtr. IPP Manisha Alwis, who has been incredibly supportive and motivating throughout my journey. Both of them have been key figures in shaping my Rotaract experience.
Q. What challenges have you faced in Rotaract?
Balancing academics with Rotaract responsibilities has been a major challenge. There were times when 24 hours in a day didn’t feel like enough, but I always found a way to manage. It’s been tough, but the support of my team has made it possible.
Another challenge was maintaining strong relationships within the club. Last year, as PD Director, I worked closely with Rtr. Senali Guruge, and our teamwork was incredible. We split responsibilities and supported each other, which made everything smoother. That sense of collaboration and camaraderie has stayed with us, and our committee members from that year remain close even now.

Q. Any funny or memorable moments you’d like to share?
One funny moment happened during a general meeting when my laptop froze mid-presentation. I couldn’t see the last few lines of my script, so I had to improvise. I ended up making up words on the spot to finish the presentation! It was nerve-wracking at the time, but now it’s something we all laugh about.
Q. What advice would you give to someone considering joining Rotaract?
If you’re thinking about joining Rotaract, go for it. It’s a platform where you can learn essential skills—like public speaking, networking, and leadership—that you won’t get from lectures.
Rotaract isn’t just about skills; it’s about connections. The bonds you form here often feel like family. These relationships last well beyond your time at university. If you’re looking for growth, camaraderie, and a chance to make a difference, Rotaract is the perfect place to start.
