Books, Breaks, and Brainpower: Life as an FHS Student at SLIIT

Ever wondered what it’s like to juggle lectures, group projects, and panic-fueled study sessions as a student of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences (FHS) at SLIIT? Then you’re reading the right blog because I will be spilling the so-called, “tea’ for you all.

Morning Hustle

The start of my day is nothing special, just the usual serving of “Mother Waking Me Up at the Crack of Dawn” with a side of “Another 5 Minutes?”. I come to the university around 8.00 a.m., if I’m lucky, and then begin the long, long, walk up and down hills, and through flights of stairs, to the “New Building,” in which resides the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences.

Unlocking the Mind

One of the best things about our faculty is the energy that it brings. Do not get me wrong, the stress is high, and the workload is sky-high, but there’s also a certain electric flow of creativity, and calm that is ever-present, which for me is perfect to start my day of lectures, drama, and gossip. By midday, my head is filled with information, fuzzy as it may be, but it is something. Exhaustion after making arguments, looking at presentations on the next psychological theory, and asking questions in class catches up, and I start getting peckish.

Coffee, Chats, and Chill

I and my friends run to catch a table at the Bird’s Nest, and sit down to eat, solve the problems of the day, judge the events of the morning, and even decide if we want to call it a day, or brave the storm, or if we want to go in the shuttle or go in a tuk.

Afternoon Grind

After the break, we get back down to business, and it’s back to the lectures we go! We repeat the cycle of attempting to take in the lesson, but since the end of the day grows near, all we can think about is going home, rushing to the library to finish pending assignments, or making it to the club and society meetings that loom over our heads. However, after getting through the last hour of lectures, we all take a few minutes to debrief any last bit of gossip we have, and then we say our goodbyes and rush off towards the next thing we must do, which for me, most of the time, is going home.

Reflect and Relax

Back home, despite the only thing on my mind, being a good sleep, I refresh myself and get down to reviewing what I did that day since that’s what TikTok told me is good to do as a university student. I mentally review my checklist, and once that’s done, I get back into my usual rhythm of watching a movie or series, or reading a book, eating dinner, and getting that much-needed sleep.

Life as an FHS student, while challenging, is rewarding. From having the most amazing friends to eventful lectures, and being able to grow, connect, and make memories, it’s no secret that every twist and turn I take in this faculty is absolutely worth it!
