🌎World Clean Up Day: Youth in Action for a Cleaner Tomorrow
Every year, World Cleanup Day brings together millions of volunteers across 190+ countries all united by one dream: to make our planet cleaner, greener, and healthier.
It’s proof that when people come together with purpose, even the smallest actions can create ripples of real change.
Carrying that same spark, the Community Service Co-directors, Rtr. Yadhurshika RathnaKumaran & Rtr. Chanudi Amaratunga of the Rotaract Club of SLIIT joined the entire district in celebrating the World Clean Up day on 20th September. We focused on the area around the SLIIT campus, from the BOC ATM to the location basically opposite Pizza Hut, including the drainage behind the bus stand. The cleaning was challenging due to the adverse weather conditions but it was a job well done.
Following that success, they also launched Phase 1 of Clean Horizons: Transit Care, a heartfelt mission to boost sanitation and community well-being. Held on 28th September 2025 at the Kaduwela Bus Station, this project wasn’t just about cleaning up, it was about redefining how we care for the spaces we share. By making public transport areas safer and more hygienic, the project supported Rotary’s Focus Area: Disease Prevention and Treatment.
Under the dedicated leadership of Rtr. Chanudi Amaratunga, the volunteer team showed up early with gloves on, bags ready, energy high. Together, they turned effort into impact, transforming the bus station into a cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming spot for everyone passing through.
The result?
A visible transformation and an even bigger reminder of what teamwork, passion, and responsibility can do.
Transit Care was more than a cleanup; it was a movement.
A reminder that youth have the power to lead with heart and purpose. When we choose to act not wait, we become the change our communities need.
