“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
How would you feel if us Sri Lankans didn’t have free education?
Would many of us even be here?
What would the country, the world be if Education is only available for Elites?
Wouldn’t we all vote in favor of having equal rights despite circumstances?
Social Justice means ensuring that all individuals have equal access to resources and opportunities. The Social Justice day, celebrated on 20th February each year, was established by United Nations in 2007 to promote fairness, equality, human rights and opportunities to all the people around the world. The main goal is encouraging governments to create societies where everyone is treated with equal dignity and respect regardless of their backgrounds.
This year, the official theme for The Social Justice day is “Renewed Commitment for Social Development and Social Justice.”
It focuses on strengthening the actions that reduce poverty and inequality, expand decent work opportunities and increase social protection.
Around the world, discussions, events and speeches are organized to educate and spread awareness about the importance of this day.
As for us Sri Lankans, we are already reaping the benefits of The Social Justice interms of many aspects. The Free Education Policy introduced in 1945 by C.W.W. Kannangara made it possible for all children around the country to get education from primary up until university level.
Social Justice is not about giving special treatment. It is about making sure that everyone starts with a fair chance.
