The key to minimizing unhelpful stress is to first become aware of it. Which is why Stress Awareness Month takes place every April. Rotaract Club of SLIIT initiated “Stress Less” awareness campaign via social media to increase public awareness about stress, highlighting the causes of stress, the negative effects stress can have on the mind and body, and how to relieve stress.
If left unchecked, stress can be deadly, in fact, stress is often referred to as the “silent killer” because although its effects are not immediately apparent, it can lead to a number of serious health problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease. This is why Stress Awareness Month is important. It informs people about stress and provides them with the tools and resources to manage it.
Although one bad day at work won’t compromise your health, weeks or months of stress can dampen your immune response and raise your risk for disease. Every day you mention something about being stressed, overwhelmed, or being too busy. But are you truly aware of your stress level and how it is keeping you from living the way you desire?
Become aware of how stress affects you, and begin to make small changes which can have a large impact on your health and your enjoyment of life. Look to the things that you lose track of time doing. How do you naturally relax and recharge? Petting a dog? Coloring a picture? Then grant yourself some guilt free time to indulge in what you love.
It’s time to put work aside for a while and look after yourself. Help yourself, help a friend in need. Let’s get ourselves educated, take necessary precautions and be healthy!
