Children’s Day Celebrations 2018

“There is no garden as beautiful as Childhood”. Every child is a different kind of flower; together they make this world a beautiful garden. A day marking childhood; “Children’s Day” – a time to honor and celebrate the joys of childhood through various activities and events catered especially for children.

In order to celebrate this special day, on the 30th of September 2018, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT in collaboration with Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Adventure Lands (Pvt) Ltd organized a day full of fun adventures for children all over from Sri Lanka at Viharamahadevi Park.

The park was crowded with a multitude of children of different ages alongside their parents, all waiting in queues to try out all the fun filled activities that were in store for them. These varied activities included; archery, basketball, rock climbing, obstacle courses and much more. Apart from all these strenuous activities there were food and beverage stalls to fill their famished tummies.

What was remarkable about that day was what we saw; the children had no divisions based on color or creed and everyone was more than willing to help each other out. Their faces were all lit up with innocent smiles and for a moment there all what we saw was the happiness that was revolving around them and I must say that it was quite contagious.

We are more than gratified for all those who aided us in making this event a success and we acknowledge both Rupavahini Corporation and Adventure Lands (Pvt) Ltd for teaming up with us in order to commemorate this special day.

A little history behind the concept of celebrating children’s day,

Each country celebrates children’s day on different dates, however The United Nations’ (UN) Universal Children’s Day, which was established in 1954, is celebrated on November 20 each year to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide.

However, in India Children’s Day is celebrated on November 14th as a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru who was born on 14th November 1889. He was well known throughout the world for his love for children and one of his famous quotes are; “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country”. Pandit Nehru has left behind a legacy of education and development of children in the country and also the world.

Why is this it important to celebrate children’s day?

Children build the nation sound and strong. One may question how these tiny tots can change an entire nation; the answer is yes, they can, because today’s children are responsible citizens of tomorrow. For a country to develop lies in the hands of the child and the foundation of knowledge, skills and attitude are laid in this impressionable period.

The secret of genius is to preserve the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm. – Aldous Huxley
