A joint project initiated by the Rotaract Club of SLIIT and Rotaract Club of Colombo Central on the 15th of December 2018 at Parakramabahu Maha Vidyalaya, Narahenpita. There was a much-needed urgency to commence this project as a part of encouraging and promoting growth of green life in school environments.
Trees subsidize to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. This is a basic concept that each of us learn at school, however do we actually comprehend the importance and value of our environment? Well, the recent notion of the ’10-year Challenge’ speaks quite otherwise; if we look at our world in terms of the environment both now and before we can clearly understand how much damage we have caused this gem that gives us the very air we breathe.
Building and preserving this ecosystem is an obligation that each of us should think of- we may not be able to do much as individuals, but as a collective we can make a change that will last a lifetime. Thus, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT and Colombo Central hopes to have more helping hands in the future to keep making this project a success and be an inspiration to the future generations to come. As a part of the project, a number of plants were planted all around the school premises and thereby building the stepping stones towards promoting the green school environment.
