There was a time, not so long ago, when the soulful and melodic voices of a five-member boyband entranced teenage girls. They made their audience shout out their lyrics with the utmost passion lifting their fans’ spirits with every song they composed and performed. Their music was the soundtrack of the childhoods of many late 90’s or early 00’s fans.
I distinctly recall the day I became a ‘One Direction’ fan, or a ‘Directioner’ as they call it. It was the beginning of going down a never-ending rabbit hole that became such an enthusiastic part of my childhood and teenage years. I remember collecting postcards, posters, and One Direction CDs with so much excitement back then.
Many fans across the world relate to this cathartic notion of ‘feeling heard’ by the band’s music and have become a universal community, where many unexpected friendships and bonds were created based on the love all of us share towards the band.
Out of the five, one special member had a delightful charm and an inexplicable amount of charisma not only on stage but in real life as well.
That one member is none other than, Liam James Payne. Or I should say was.

Liam was often considered the father figure of the group. His deep sense of responsibility and leadership has helped massively for the band to reach the greatest heights.
His harmonizing vocals always provided the backbone to the band’s overall performances, highlighting his value as an irreplaceable member. His contributions do not end there, as he has co-written many of the band’s hit singles such as ‘Night Changes’ and ‘Midnight Memories’.
Even after the band’s hiatus, Liam did not stop his journey in music that he started at the young age of 16 years old.
Personally, two of my favorite songs from his solo albums are ‘For You’ and ‘Teardrops’, which were penned and vocalized by himself. He recently stated that ‘Teardrops’ was “A song that is born from many tears. Some are mine. Others are not.” This expresses his struggles as a victim of an unbearable amount of fame and his coping mechanisms in difficult situations. He showed us a side of his career that is often bittersweet. He was transparent about his methods of relief, which might’ve had long-term impacts on his life. His advocacy for mental health has positively influenced his large fanbase, encouraging his fans to open up and seek help in their distress.
His inspiring characteristics tread further, as a few days before his untimely passing, Liam was spotted cheering in the stands during his fellow former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert held in Argentina, displaying true friendship and his support for the people in his life.
On a tragic note, the 16th of October marks a grievous day in the hearts of many, especially in the hearts of fans that adored One Direction, and Liam Payne ever since their childhood. And of course, the most unfortunate revelation through this unexpected news was the fact that fans all over the world had always dreamed of a possible One Direction reunion, and have remained hopeful for years, until today. This anticipated dream has now become a dream forever, taking away a nostalgic part of our childhood with him, as he was not just a singer, he was a companion through the ups and downs of our lives. And for that, I am thankful. The memories that were fused with the excitement and all the magical moments I got to experience, along with many others, will forever be cherished and treasured in my heart.
Thank you, Liam Payne. Through your music, you will live forever in our hearts.
“You & me got a whole lot of history,
so don’t let it go, we can make some more
we can live forever.”
