Walking the Mile: From Classroom to Corporate

“Walk the Mile” was more than just an industry visit; it was a meaningful step into the professional world for over 100 SLIIT undergraduates. Organized by the Rotaract Club of SLIIT, under the Professional Development Avenue with the leadership of Project Chairpersons Rtr. Yeshan K.P and Rtr. Shenaya Jayasekara, in collaboration with Virtusa, the initiative focused on giving students real exposure to the IT industry and helping them better understand their career paths.

As the saying goes, “The best way to learn is by experiencing,” and this project truly brought that idea to life.

The project was conducted in two phases, with two sessions each held on the 31st of March and the 6th of April. The sessions were led by Ms. Nethumya Jayawickrama from the HR team. Each session began with a brief introduction, where she was warmly welcomed and introduced to the delegates. From there, she carried the session forward in a highly engaging and practical manner, covering key areas such as interview preparation, LinkedIn optimization, professional presence, and emerging industry trends, including the impact of AI.

What truly stood out was the level of interaction. Students were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones—introducing themselves creatively, even taking on challenges like speaking without using “I.” Some participants had their LinkedIn profiles reviewed live, receiving honest and constructive feedback. The discussions also highlighted what recruiters genuinely look for, along with the importance of extracurricular involvement alongside academic achievements.

Both Rotaract and non-rotaract members were present for these sessions, along with a few members from the board, including the directors of the professional development avenue; Rtr. Miyuni De Almeida and Rtr. Suvasthiga Suveendran.

Midway through, a short tea break provided a chance for participants to relax, network, and reflect before the session continued with further interactive discussions. The second half encouraged students to openly ask questions, share their personal concerns, and seek guidance on their career journeys, with many engaging in one-on-one conversations as well.

The experience concluded on a high note with a group photograph, capturing a day filled with learning, interaction, and inspiration. “Walk the Mile” truly brought students one step closer to the realities of the corporate world.
