Chak Gadu on the Beach: A Traditional Game That Brought Us Closer

Sometimes the best fellowship events don’t need a conference hall or a formal agenda. Just sand, a traditional game, and good company. That is exactly what the Rotary Club of Edith Cowan University delivered with Chak Gudu.

The Rotaract Club of SLIIT was thrilled to receive the invitation. This unique initiative was all about bringing young people together through one of Sri Lanka’s beloved community games, and we were eager to be part of it. The event took place on 22nd April at Mount Lavinia Beach, running from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. From our side, Thiviyan and Subhanajan stepped up as chairpersons, making sure everything ran smoothly. Nine members from SLIIT joined in, while ECU brought nearly ten of their own.

We gathered, hopped on a bus together, and arrived at the beach in the afternoon. The organizers had already marked the playing area on the sand. After a quick change into comfortable clothes, the excitement was impossible to miss. Teams were mixed between both clubs, which meant the focus was on teamwork and laughter rather than rivalry. Two teams of six members each were formed.

Then the whistle blew. Players took turns raiding and defending, chasing points while slipping and sliding across the sand. By the end, everyone was covered from head to toe, and that only made us laugh harder.
After the matches came a quiet kind of magic. We watched the sunset over Mount Lavinia Beach, walked along the shore, and dipped our feet into the sea while conversations flowed easily. A quick stop at a nearby Food City for refreshments wrapped up the evening perfectly.

This project did more than revive interest in traditional Sri Lankan games. It built real friendships between two clubs. A huge thank you to the Rotary Club of ECU for the invitation and for an unforgettable day. We are already counting down to the next one
