The World Tourism Day itself falls on the 27th of September every year, which is declared by the United Nations in 1979, their main aim was to promote and increase awareness of the importance of tourism, and its social, cultural, political and economic values. The day is hosted by the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation). Every Year Tourism Day is celebrated under different themes, this year it’s TOURISM: BUILDING PEACE! AND FOSTERING KNOWLEDGE!
Let me tell you what the tourism industry truly means and why it is important to embrace it and build it up for the betterment of a country.
Tourism is a huge industry, and has been an integral contributor to the growth of many countries. This booming sector is something that the whole world celebrates. It really doesn’t matter which country you live in, because there is always a group of people who are interested in visiting our very own homelands. Tourism day heightens the enthusiasm and excitement of travelling, making it such an important part of every country’s economy and global standing.
A country can gain so much from its tourism sector, making it vital to the well being of a nation’s foundation. The broadening of this sector brings in a very large amount of wealth, growth, exposure and employment opportunities.
One of the biggest benefits that tourism has for every country is that it provides a way for the economy to receive a massive amount of wealth flowing towards it. In a way it helps to fund local tour operators, small businesses and vendors.
There are a handful of industries that make up the backbone of most countries, and when these industries fall short, the entire economy becomes strained. Tourism is one of the industries that is reasonably reliable, and offers a constant flow of income into the country. This means that tourism can sometimes be a country’s main industry. As others change with the seasons, tourism remains heavy. Tourism assists to ease the strain caused from suffering industries, and helps minimise the massive effect this has on the country’s economy. It has an incredible economic benefit, and it is especially wonderful for new and developing economies.
Due to the up-running Tourism industry, it enhances the feeling of pride that local tribes and villages feel towards their communities and traditions. As most tourists want an authentic experience, it gives out the opportunity to the locals to showcase and celebrate their traditions and culture, keeping the fire burning on sacred customs that might have died out otherwise.
In this way, tourism also allows for the expansion of local heritage sites and structures. This means that sacred sites become protected and maintained, as opposed to being destroyed or weathered by time. The traditions originated within these sites are secured in the process and the ancient customs to be long preserved and enjoyed, rather than dying out.
When it comes to the massive amount of opportunities that the tourism industry offers, the best of them is its way of creating multiple job opportunities for the locals. I think this perhaps be the most obvious benefit of tourism within every country.
This can spread throughout all fields, providing new jobs for the local people within countries, opening new doors for many other new local Entrepreneurs to start up their own new businesses or sell their own unique products to tourists. This is something that comes only with a booming tourism industry, allowing for jobs to be created from these new businesses within the travel and tourism sector.
This is how important the tourism industry is and one of the main reasons why tourism has become needed all across the planet, and plays such an important role for countries.
Tourism has become the legs which many countries use to walk forward, and it is something that brings joy to many people all across the globe. The simple fact that people of all nationalities can get together and appreciate one another by visiting certain countries is a true blessing.
Along with the pride and enjoyment that tourism evokes, it is also a huge industry that supports the lives of millions of people. As we all know due to the Pandemic, the tourism industry in the whole world has faced its downfall throughout the beginning of this year. But it’s time to hold our hands together to spread the beauty and knowledge to Make Tourism Alive Again…

Travel has been said to broaden the mind, exploring the world and seeing the broad vistas and cultures that the people of the world offer. Tourism can describe travel for pleasure both foreign and domestic, and has been happening as long as long as mankind.
Tourism Day is your opportunity to broad your own world a little, find a location you’ve always wanted to make time to visit, and finally, get around to making time to do it. So find your inner traveller and get out there and experience the places you’ve always wanted to see.
“Tourism helps rural communities hold onto their unique natural and cultural heritage, supporting conservation projects, including those safeguarding endangered species, lost traditions or flavours.” ~Zurab Pololikashvili~
Self- Development through Travel
With the web and our lifestyle, being swarmed by the material on self-development, teaching us different ways to become a more superior self, one thing is clear — we all want a better version of ourselves and become more efficient than we are today.
Travel solves a plethora of self-improvement goals in one fell swoop. But once you take the initiative, you are making a conscious choice to commence on a journey of adventure and self-discovery. The independence that you gain from travelling can compel you to create the type of life that you want. There are positive and negative aspects of travelling, but both will facilitate you to gain confidence. The more challenges you come across during your travels, the stronger you become.
Travelling also teaches us to accept diversity. We develop a greater tolerance for things being different. As your exposure to a new culture and different types of individuals grows, little by little you get more open-minded. When placed in a different environment you get an opportunity to learn how to tolerate other people’s opinions and understand others better.
Exploring Culture through Tourism
The cultural and cultural-cognitive tourism actually is this form of tourism, which focuses on the cultural environment, which in turn may include cultural and historical sights of a destination or cultural-historical heritage, values and lifestyle of the local population, arts, crafts, traditions and customs of the local population. Furthermore, cultural and cognitive routes may include a visit or participation in cultural activities and events, visit museums, concerts, exhibitions, galleries, etc.
Ecotourism
Ecotourism initiatives encouraging development compatible with nature conservation are gaining ground across the world. Ecotourism is concerned with both conservation and sustainable development. Sustainable development is the development which meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Nature conservation can be defined more narrowly as the management of human use of organisms or ecosystems to ensure that such use is sustainable. Nature conservation is also a part of sustainable development and sustainability must also contain human development.
Ecotourism. Green travel. Eco-travel. Sustainable travel. Whatever you call it – we call it “awesome,” for many reasons than one.
Solo travel
“Live with no excuses and travel with no regrets”, Oscar Wilde couldn’t have quoted it any better. Solo travel more often than not teaches you that if you wait for others to join in, you will never go anywhere.
When people think of travel, their minds are often filled with images of full moon parties in the Asian tropics, backpacking through the Medieval streets of Europe or going on an adventure trek through African and South American jungles. This “camaraderie of the road” often provides a bit of shelter from the culture shock and the anxiety of being removed from comfortable environments. There are places I want to go, people to see, experiences to have, and food to try — and only so much time to accomplish it all. So I refuse to wait. I won’t let others keep me from realising my dreams. When you strip a person of their comforts, things can get a little scary. There are times when a traveller must go at it alone, and in doing so, they will walk into a world unravelled from the familiar.
Impact of tourism on economy
When people travel, they discover a whole new world far beyond their imagination. Humans are wanderers, have always been, and will always be. Tourism is simply an extension of this, countries blessed with a rich history attract more tourists to their region; who in turn bring in an influx of foreign money and interest which helps support local economies and help sustain local traditions and cultures, all the while learning more about themselves and humanity.
No one can downplay the significance of tourism contribution to an economy. Thanks to relative global prosperity and technological advances leading to affordable travel and increased global cooperation the travel and tourism industry have seen exponential growth.
Culture, cuisine, local environments, fashion trends, language, and dialects everything is interrelated yet so different every 100 kilometres. Certainly, an activity of this complexity not just contributes to the economy but also has a huge role in the economy. Thus, the economic importance of tourism can easily go overseen as its significance extends well past people simply purchasing souvenirs and local outings. Revenue generated through tourism and hospitality offers a chance for the local economy to continue to be relevant as a tourist destination by using the funds in multiple areas for the development of the livelihood of the natives.
To celebrate this World Tourism day, we have collaborated with our twin club SLIIT with the project “Wanderer”, which gives people a platform to share their fascinating and riveting travel stories and experiences. Tourism is something that unites all of us in a sense where we are able to experience and understand cultural differences and explore infinitely.
However due to the pandemic, lives of several millions have been affected even in the tourism industry and we hope that the day comes sooner where we are all able to make travel and globetrotting a part of our lives again.
