International Translation Day is observed on 30th September every year to raise awareness about the translation profession. It helps in promoting cultural heritage and mutual respect in our changing world.
According to the UN, International Translation Day plays an important role in bringing nations together, contributing to the development and strengthening world peace and security. This day provides a great opportunity to spotlight the important work of translators, interpreters and others in the language service industry.
History
Do you know that International Translation Day is a recent entry into the calendar of world events? It is established by the International Federation of Translators (FIT). Celebrating this day annually is to pay tribute to the work of translators and the interpreters who break down the language barriers to make the world slightly a smaller place. This day is celebrated with a series of events, seminars and symposiums across the world.
On 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted a resolution 71/288 to proclaim 30 September as International Translation Day after considering the role of professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development.
30 September was chosen because this date celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. These celebrations have been promoted by FIT which was set up in 1953. Even in 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to show the solidarity of the worldwide translation community and also to promote the translation profession in several countries.
Significance

Let me tell you that the translator and interpreter are two professions dedicated to one goal that is facilitating communication between people. Both interpreters and translators are at the junction point that impacts the development of business, science, medicine, technology, international law, politics and a host of other areas. This will provide the ability for each of these in the world to learn from each other to the benefit of society as a whole. Therefore, International Translation Day highlights the role of translation to encourage the profession, which helps in promoting an understanding of the intangible cultural heritage and mutual respect in our changing world.
International Translation Day 2020
The theme of International Translation Day, 2020 is “Finding the words for a world in crisis”. Despite the Covid-19 crisis, FIT is focused on highlighting the significance of translators, interpreters and terminologists in managing the situations on an International scale, National scale as well as on a local scale. Translation professionals are most significant to make sure the flow of information between different language groups, and this is the reason the theme of the 2020 edition of the International Translation Day.
The work of translators and interpreters is far from finished. It’s still being carried out silently and diligently every single day, often without thanks or recognition. International Translation Day draws attention to that work and gives the world the opportunity to thank those who have given us so much. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the hard work done by translators all around the world in making a prosperous tomorrow.

පරිවර්තන වෘත්තිය පිළිබඳව දැනුවත් කිරීම සඳහා සෑම වසරකම සැප්තැම්බර් 30 වන දින ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනය සමරනු ලැබේ. එය අපගේ වෙනස්වන ලෝකය තුළ සංස්කෘතික අනන්‍යතාවය සහ අන්‍යෝන්‍ය ගෞරවය ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීමට උපකාරී වේ.
එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානයට අනුව, ජාතීන් අතර සහයෝගීතාවය ප්‍රවර්ධනයට, සංවර්ධනයට දායක වීම සහ ලෝක සාමය හා ආරක්ෂාව ශක්තිමත් කිරීම සඳහා ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනය වැදගත් කාර්යභාරයක් ඉටු කරයි. භාෂා සේවා කර්මාන්තයේ දියුණුවට පරිවර්තකයන් සහ වෙනත් අයගේ වැදගත් කාර්යයන් හඳුනා ගැනීමට මෙම දිනය හොඳ අවස්ථාවක් සපයයි.
ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනය ලෝක සිදුවීම් දින දර්ශනයට මෑතකදී එක්වූ බව ඔබ දන්නවාද? එය ස්ථාපිත කර ඇත්තේ ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තක සම්මේලනය (FIT) විසිනි. වාර්ෂිකව මෙම දිනය සැමරීමෙන් ලෝකය තරමක් කුඩා ස්ථානයක් බවත් භාෂා බාධක බිඳ දැමීමට පරිවර්තකයන්ගේ දායකත්වය ඉතා අගනා බවත් ලොව පුරා ප්‍රචාරය කලහැකිය. සැප්තැම්බර් 30 තෝරාගෙන ඇත්තේ මෙදින පරිවර්තකයන්ගේ අනුශාසක සාන්තුවරයා ලෙස සැලකෙන බයිබල් පරිවර්තකයා වන ශාන්ත ජෙරොම්ගේ මංගල්‍යය සමරන බැවිනි.
“පරිවර්තනයක් නොතිබුණි නම්, අපි බොහෝ විට නිශ්ශබ්දතාවයට මායිම්ව ඇති පළාත්වල ජීවත් වන්නෙමු”.
පරිවර්තකයින් ව්‍යාපාර, විද්‍යාව, වෛද්‍ය විද්‍යාව, තාක්‍ෂණය, ජාත්‍යන්තර නීතිය, දේශපාලනය සහ වෙනත් ක්ෂේත්‍ර රාශියක සංවර්ධනයට බලපාන මෙහෙයක් ඉටු කරයි. 2020 ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනයේ තේමාව වන්නේ “අර්බුදකාරී ලෝකයක් සඳහා වචන සෙවීම” යන්නයි. කොවිඩ් -19 අර්බුදය නොතකා, ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිමාණයෙන්, ජාතික පරිමාණයෙන් මෙන්ම ප්‍රාදේශීය පරිමාණයෙන් ද තත්ත්වයන් කළමනාකරණය කිරීමේදී පරිවර්තකයන්ගේ වැදගත්කම ඉස්මතු කිරීම කෙරෙහි FIT අවධානය යොමු කර ඇත. විවිධ භාෂා කණ්ඩායම් අතර තොරතුරු ගලායාම සහතික කිරීම සඳහා පරිවර්තන වෘත්තිකයන් වඩාත් වැදගත් වන අතර 2020 අන්තර්ජාතික පරිවර්තන දිනයේ තේමාවට හේතුව මෙයයි.
බොහෝ විට ස්තූතියකින් හෝ පිළිගැනීමකින් තොරව දිනපතා නිහඩව හා කඩිසරව සිදු කෙරෙන පරිවර්තකයෙකුගේ කාර්යයට අවසානයක් නැත. ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනය එම කාර්යය කෙරෙහි අවධානය යොමු කරන අතර අපට බොහෝ දේ ලබා දුන් ඔවුන්ට ස්තූති කිරීමට ලෝකයට අවස්ථාව ලබා දෙයි. සමෘද්ධිමත් හෙට දවසක් උදෙසා ලොව පුරා පරිවර්තකයන් විසින් දරන ලද වෙහෙස අගය කිරීමට මොහොතක් කැප කරමු!
