2020 is a year that will go down in history as one of the most shocking years a man had to go through. From forest fires, to riots and the devastating breakout of the Corona virus, the news did take a toll on the whole planet. Thus 2020, was definitely an eye opener to start thinking back and reflecting on life, especially since everyone was forced to slow down and stay at home, in a fast paced world. With this background, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT continued the project, “Before I Die 3.0” for the 3rd consecutive year in the aim of encouraging the community to reflect on life and realize the things that really matter.

Before I die is a global art project initiated by the Candy Changs in New Orleans which uses the walls in the city to find ways in coping with death and giving meaning to it. Inspired by this, in 2018 with the help of Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT was able to put up the first wall at the Hikkaduwa Beach as a memento for the victims of the catastrophic Tsunami in 2004.

Under Before I die 3.0, the project was not only in memory of the Tsunami victims but all the many lives we have lost in the past. The project took a step back to illuminate the community and light a lamp in a moment of solitude, especially in memory of those we lost to the tragedies of Tsunami, the Easter Attack and the Corona Pandemic. Thereafter, the community was invited to share their personal wishes while having a meaningful reflection on life, death, hopes and dreams. Given the situation of being locked at home, the wall where they could write their personal aspirations was set up by online means. After collecting the thoughts of the public, the virtual boards which mimic Before I Die walls, were shared across our social media pages. Further to keep everyone involved with the project, the campaign continued on Instagram as well by sharing a template on which one can share the good deed they wish to do before they die, and tag their friends to continue the same.

Before I die 3.0 serves as a reminder on how short and uncertain life can be, thus inviting everyone to focus and prioritize the things that will give meaning to one’s life. It was able to provide some sort of comfort to those victimized by the tragedy of losing someone they loved, by trying to fill the void, thus helping them to cope emotionally and put their mental state at peace. The project done in honor of the loved ones we have lost, also gives the public a purpose to fulfil and find a way to give back to the community. Amongst many goals that were shared, “I want to support a child in need for his/her education”, “I want to build a temple with my own money, that I earned in a good way“, “I want to donate my eyes”, “I want to donate my hair to a cancer hospital”, “I want to build an animal shelter”- are some of the highlighted wishes the Rotaractors and the community had shared with us.

In the next phase of Before I die 3.0, the aspirations of some will be made a reality. The team hopes to give meaning to their life while giving them a chance to make an impact on someone else’s life. Stay tuned.
