Today marks the 37th born-day of a magnificent person who undoubtedly changed the course of human lives. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is an American internet entrepreneur and philanthropist known for co-founding Facebook, Inc. As of March 2021, Zuckerberg’s net worth is $103.6 billion 5th-richest person in the world. Currently, he is the chief executive officer of Facebook and associated apps.
Down the memory lane
Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York. His parents are Karen a psychiatrist, and Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist. He has three sisters, Randi, Donna, and Arielle.Zuckerberg began classes at Harvard in 2002, where he studied psychology and computer science. He dropped out of Harvard in his second year to complete his project. He met Priscilla Chan, his future wife at a fraternity party. Start of a new chapter
In his second year, he wrote a program that he called CourseMatch, which allowed users to make the class selection and to help them form study groups. A short time later, he created a program called Facemash that let students select the best-looking person from a choice of photos. The site went up immediately after launch but, the college shut it down. Its popularity had overwhelmed one of Harvard’s network switches and prevented students from accessing the internet. In addition, many students complained that their photos were being used without permission. Zuckerberg apologized publicly, and the student paper ran articles stating that his site was completely improper.
The spark in the dormitory
Zuckerberg started writing code for a new website in the following semester. On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched “The Facebook,” from his dormitory room. Six days after the site went live, three Harvard seniors accused Zuckerberg of deceiving them into believing he would help them build a social network. He was just getting their ideas to create a competing product. Following Facebook’s official launch, the three filed a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, which was eventually settled. A total of 1.2 million Facebook shares were agreed upon as part of the settlement.In the middle of 2004, Zuckerberg and a group of friends rented a small house in California to use as an office. Despite the controversy in the mishandling of user privacy and its questionable role in political manipulation in the United States, Facebook continued to grow. By the end of 2020, Facebook’s monthly active user base had grown to 2.8 billion users.
On a Laughable note, Zuckerberg’s FB account was also hacked in 2018. The Social Network was a film based on Zuckerberg and the early years of Facebook. When told about the film, Zuckerberg responded, “I just wish nobody made a movie of me while I was still alive.”
In contrast, Zuckerberg’s main focus was not to create a billion-dollar company but to accomplish a social mission to make the world more open and connected. Maybe he might have gone a bit too far collecting our info on FB. But, let’s not be harsh on the birthday boy because he remembered our birthdays when no one else did!
